Songs of Faith, Hope and Love

1.     Summer’s End

Each fall, my grandmother used to wave goodbye to a family cottage and say, “I hope to see you next year”. As we have the next generalizations winterize, we also find ourselves looking forward to another season of relaxed times with family and friends.

2.     Dance With Me

One of those “falling in love” songs. Though the relationship did not last, the dreams and hopes are still vivid in my memory. I suspect I’ll always enjoy singing about such a wondrous time.

3.     Building Bridges

The world mission conference inspired this song. As I was driving home, the theme “building bridges” evoked a melody. I had jotted down a chorus and two verses when I stopped at a small diner for lunch. Just above my booth was a painting of a bridge with a man holding the hand of a hand of a child as they crossed the river. That image became verse 3!

 4.     Why’d You Have to Go?

A song about our family’s experience when my Dad, a wonderful man, passed on. Though somewhat expected, it is always too soon, and it happened too quickly.

5.     Be Still and Know

A “prayer song” based on Psalm 46, with additional words from Psalm 23. Mathew 11 and John 15. Quiet meditation has long been part of my spiritual practice. The song expresses my conviction that it is often quietness that can revitalize us, in mind, body, and spirit.

6.     Reach Out

From a personal and pastoral perspective, I remind myself and others that love is all around. It seems that all of us, whether single or married, would like a little more love and community in our lives. Perhaps it is really as simple as “reaching out!”

7.     I Can’t Believe You’re Gone

This song reflects some of my Mom’s experience as her best friend and soul mate left this world pray that she will always find comfort and love in her remaining years.

8.     An Uphill Road

My Great Aunt Bessie loved to write poems. She had her share of personal hardships, yet lived life with a keen sense of humor and a courageous spirit. The first verse is hers, the second is mine, and the delightful vintage arrangement is Ken Medema’s!

9.     Keep Hope Alive

I loved President Obama’s ideas in his book, The Audacity of Hope. After the November 4th election, I joined many in a bit of euphoric hope! Yet, I am aware of unrealistic expectations often placed on anyone in a leadership role, so I sing about realistic hope…working together, over time.

10.  Spirit Blooming

Reflecting on the experience of life and love, I share my conviction that there is a Divine Love which is the source and completion of all human love.

Heartfelt thanks to:

Many friends who encouraged me and my gifts, listened to new songs and collaborated on lyrics.

My family who put up with very rough drafts of songs, and especially my Mom, who still listens attentively to any musical things her children do.

The congregations I have pastored who have been supportive, not simply “captive” audiences, with special thanks to Belleville Church for granting me sabbatical leave to work on my music.

The staff at Brier Patch Music for their assistance with this project… for their humor and love. They model true community.

Ken Medema. Words cannot express my deep gratitude, as his music has been healing, uplifting, strengthening, and often a travel companion for me! What a privilege to collaborate on this recording with. Such a gifted composer with a huge heart.
